At this point in the morning the Captain did something I didn't expect. He turned off the engines (or at least shut them down to the point that they were silent). We then sat in this place for over an hour just gazing at the glaciers. There were a couple of spectacular crashes as bits broke off into the water. It drove home the actual distance we were from them when there was a sizable delay before we HEARD the ice break and splash. It was merely an illusion that we could have swum right over to it in no time.

Eventually they cranked the engine back on and spun the ship around to head back out of the bay.
