This page will be taken up mostly by our flight and arrival in London: We left SFO pretty much on time in a 747 sitting in the middle section which I hate cuz I like a window, but oh well. Virgin has individual TV screens for each passenger, and you can pick from among 8-12 movies, some TV shows, Super Nintendo games or watch your flight progress on a map. This was really cool and kept us amused the entire 11 hours we were in the air.
We arrived at Heathrow at about 11:00am. There was no room at the terminal for us so we had to take stairs off the plane then a bus to the terminal. We cleared Customs fairly quickly then had a smoke. We discovered the Heathrow Express last time we were here and took it again. You just can't beat 15 minutes to Paddington. We used one of our BritRail days but it was worth it. From Paddington we caught the tube to the Queensway Rd Station, then hoofed it 2 blocks down to the Grand Plaza Hotel. Man we felt like pros! Last time we staggered around Paddington disoriented for an hour. This time we hardly paused to look at a tube map! We were a little early getting to the hotel, but they let us check in anyway. Ok 1 little direction problem. We were on the 5th floor and the clerk said to use the lift, and pointed to some doors, telling us to go all the way down. Well there was a lift just inside the doors but the sign said Lift 2 which our jet-lagged brains meant Lift TO 2. So we walked, dragging our luggage, all the way down the hall, and around the corner, to another lift. This was Lift 1. We realized our mistake and got into the very small lift which unfortunately only went as high as the 4th floor. Sigh. We walked around on the 4th floor until we found steps up to the 5th, then all the way down the hall to our room: Which was right next to Lift 2. :) We dumped our luggage then went out postcard shopping.
