Our first week in the UK we spent staying at a friend's house in Shotley Gate. Shotley Gate is a tiny little town on the end of a peninsula in Suffolk. You get there from London by taking a train out of Liverpool Street Station to Ipswich. From there you catch the #97 Bus out to Shotley Gate. Train takes about an hour, the bus, 30-45 minutes-ish. Our host was Matt Staples who graciously opened up his newly purchased flat to us. Kel met him online a couple of years ago, when he lived in Southampton. We met fairly briefly on our last trip when we were there to board the QE2. Since then he has graduated and gotten a real job and his own flat.

We imposed upon him for 7 days and only came close to strangling each other 3 times! Shotley Gate would be a nice place to live but didn't make for a very good sightseeing base of operations except in value for the dollar: we probably saved over $1000 staying with Matt. His flat was very comfortable and close enough to the local pubs for me.

From here we did several day trips into London, and one day, a trip to London then Salisbury and Stonehenge and back. Ya gotta love the trains! We played Risk several nights in a row, until Matt got tired of being ganged up on. We cooked dinner for him one night that had our normal amount of garlic, though Matt's co-workers thought we'd overdone it :). The Shipwreck was our pub of choice and we ate dinner there twice. It required a dark cold walk along the seawall however, which kept us from wanting to eat there every night.

On Saturday April 1st we said good bye to Matt and headed off to York.
