There's mistake number 2. To make it easier to dig we'd wet down the area. We used a bit too much water here, and noticed it was holding pretty well. We figured it would drain and dry while we put down the wire reinforement. It did... and we watched it all of a sudden drain really fast down a new hole under Chernobl. I probed a bit with a shovel handle and unfortunately found huge pockets under the roots of the yucca then then quickly filled with water.
At that point we SHOULD have removed the reinforment wire and gotten in there with a big shovel and fixed things but we got lazy and I did my best to fill it in with just the handle of the shovel. The wire was really in the way. I kept filling in the air pockets then testing with the hose until finally it looked like I'd gotten them all.
