On one of the 2 formal nights at dinner I decided to try a black shirt with my gray suit and much to my surprise it looked great. That tie-tack is actually a FreeBSD Lapel Pin BTW. For some reason, the formal nights were shunned by much of the Perl Geek crowd (nyuk nyuk). Our table had a pretty good turn out though because, for the most part we consisted of guys who CAN function in the outside world :-)
