Here's a fun-nasty bit of history for ya. When the railroads were being built the English railroad barons got the government to force the canal boats to give them deep discounts on moving the construction materials. Hence many of the canals have railroad tracks running really close by. So once the railroads were completed what happened? They priced the canal boats out of business. Faster and cheaper. Capitalism hasn't changed much...
