The highest natural water on the Kennet & Avon Canal just happens to be 40 feet lower than the summit. Obviously this is a problem. One way to solve it is to dig a tunnel to bypass the summit but that wouldn't work here.. way too far. There is a tunnel at the very top which takes care of some of it but the better solution is to pump water up that last 40 feet in elevation. This is the Pump House at Crofton. An old steam powered pump that used to do the job with 2 beam engine pumps. It's been restored and once a month or so they start it up for tourists under full steam. Usually it's a quiet museum, the actual pumping being done nearby with newer electric pumps.

Matt and I thought poking around this pump house was incredible but the girls were kinda bored. Not enough flowers and stuff I guess :)
