Remember I mentioned Lock #56 earlier? Well here it is. Remember also I mentioned we were 'special'. Special because most charters go for a full week but we didn't want to trapped on a boat for half our trip in case it sucked (do-over would have us going the whole week BTW). So we had to keep to a fairly rigorous schedule in order to get as close to Bath as possible (we had train tix back to London from there). Any little hitch in our progress was worrisome.

Lock #56 stalled us for a couple of hours. It was broken. We pull in, close the doors and open the upstream paddles. Boats begin to rise but only to about halfway... wha?

Turns out one of the downstream paddles was open. It's one of the few hydraulic paddles (as opposed to geared) and if you've ever watched Junkyard Wars (Scrapheap Challenge in the UK) you'll know that hydraulics ALWAYS fail. A call to British Waterways was made but we were told it could be awhile.. More on next slide.
