Greetings and welcome to the first big addition to my website since our last European Trek in 1998! The following pages chronicles our Trip to the UK in March-April 2000. We spent 3 weeks this time. Kel and Tower Bridge When we got back from our last trip to the area, we felt we'd missed too much due to time and travel snafus so we itched to get back. With very few exceptions we planned and booked this trip entirely on the web. There is a link above to Links, which will show you the urls we used as well as some we found useful once we got there. We began planning the trip in the Fall of 1999, basically watching airfares in the newspaper. Once they dropped to a nice low price we started pricing them using CheapTickets.com.Len and the Tower Once we settled on a date, we booked the flight there. We got tickets on a direct SFO to Heathrow flight on Virgin Atlantic for $368 each, round trip! We were then able to decide where we wanted to go in the UK and when. This took a week or so, shuffling little pieces of paper around on a calander. We got in touch, via email, with our "pen-pal" in Ipswich who offered to let us stay in his flat there for a week. We wanted to see York and Edinburgh as well as Salisbury and Bath. Once we grew tired of shuffling, our itinerary looked like this:
Edinburgh Castle March 23rdFly SFO to Heathrow: Arr AM March 24th
March 24thStay 1 night in London to de-jet-lag
March 25th - April 1stIpswich/Shotley Gate with day trips to London
April 1st - April 4thYork
April 4th - April 7thEdinburgh
April 7th - April 13thLondon
April 13thFly Heathrow to SFO, arr in the early afternoon
We then began booking hotels and purchasing train/tube passes. We used a couple of different tourism sites (see the Links page) for the hotels and RailEurope.com for the transport. We got everything booked and confirmed by the week before we were to leave, with the exception of York. York Minster I finally found a place that looked nice, was walking distance and in our price range, so I used their on-line form to make the reservation. No response - panic. So I faxed them, and we got it all settled that way no problem. The day before we left we double checked everything. That's when we noticed we'd missed a day! We had no place to stay on April 7th in London! We remembered seeing a cool place on the web the last time we booked our trip called the Pavilion: The Rock & Roll Fashion Hotel. Glen Coe It looked way cool but was a bit pricey. This time we thought, what the hell, it's only for 1 night. Had a hard time finding it again... their website wasn't very up to date. We tried booking it through a place in Colorado, which did not get back to us via email before we left. We had to keep checking our email once we got there to see if it was booked or not (it was). The trip overall was a complete success, with none of the transport problems we had last time. We've gotten it out of our system now for awhile. If you'd like to browse our 5 rolls of pictures just choose one of the indexes above or below. They are organized by geographical location.
