We briefly pulled over to let the boys off so they could 'work the lock'. Our first lock was very exciting.... well, it was really neat at least. Here's how they work. For our example, we were going uphill for most of the first few days.
- If the lock is full, open the downstream paddles (little doors on the bottom of the lock gates) with your windless (or winch-handle). They crank pretty easily, being geared.
- Lean against the lock handles and when the water has all drained from the lock, the doors should swing open freely. Open as wide as possible.
- Boat drives in.
- Close lock behind boat and close the paddles.
- Open paddles with windlesses on upstream paddles.
- Lean on big lock handles until the water level equalizes and allows the doors to open.
- Boat drives out.
- Leave Lock full unless otherwise noted on a nearby sign or on the handles themselves.
