Welp the original design called for a single step up from the ground, with the portion closest to the patio being the lower-deck. It looked great on paper but once the substructure for the lower deck and the upper deck were pretty much in place, I realized that 16 inches is a helluva riser :) I had to scramble and redesign it so that I could fit an intermediate step in there. Didn't want climbing it to would resemble a hike up Everest. At this point I had figured out how to do it and was halfway through putting it all together.
