OK now a few words about the 'hotel' we stayed at for 2 long nights. When planning our trip we knew we would be spending 4 nights at a Hilton, which quite frankly, is pretty danged western. We wanted to try a more traditional Japanese style hotel. One with shoji screen walls, big bathtubs, sleeping mats etc. Our friend Onny suggested the Kimi Ryokan as an inexpensive alternative. I'm afraid when discussing it with him we may have over-emphasized low-cost and under-emphasized traditional. He also told us that one really nice thing about the 'hotel' was that the staff all spoke english, many having gone to school in LA. It catered to "westerners wanting a taste of traditional Japan". Their website also makes this claim. At the time we were pretty nervous about the language and getting lost and stuff so this was a big selling point. The website showed nicely decorated, good-sized rooms, just what we were looking for. You sense there's a big 'but' coming...

Well look at the picture.
