There are 4 big gates in the city wall of York and they are called "Bars". This one is Monk's Bar and was the one Kel and I walked through to get into town from our hotel and back. The name is a bit too close to Monkey Bars for me to not giggle... The naming conventions in York were explained to us on our Wall Walk by our guide in this manner:
In York the streets are called Gates and the gates are called Bars.
What do we call bars? Why Public Houses of course! Nyuk Nyuk Nyuk.
