On April 1st we waved good bye to Matt and Ipswich and took the train into Liverpool Street Station for the last time. Tubed over to King's Cross - St. Pancras Station then hopped onto the next train north to York. The farther we got from London, the darker the clouds began to look. Foreboding. We arrived a few hours later in the humungous York Train Station. Frankly I was expecting a smaller country type station. Took a cab (our first one!) to the Heworth Court Hotel. Check in was a breeze... they remembered my emails :) Got up to our top floor room about 3:00 and made a dinner reservation in the restaurant. It wasn't raining yet so we decided to walk into town.

We wandered about a little and found an Internet Cafe, so we had a beer and read email for an hour. Back to the hotel for a slightly expensive dinner then to crash for the night.

The next day we took a walking tour of the city walls. It began to rain 10 minutes into it, and the temperature slowly dropped until by the end we were so cold we could hardly walk! Had a cream tea, mostly to thaw out before our 15 minute walk back to the hotel. Kicked back for awhile then headed out again to find a pub for dinner. Finally found one (the Royal Oak), had dinner then back to the hotel.... that walk seems so much longer when the wind comes up!

Day 3 in York and the weather has turned truly ugly, it is sleeting. We really want to crawl back into bed after breakfast but decide it would be wasting precious vacation time so... We trudge into town, rain being driven into our faces by wind that is too strong for cheap umbrellas. Took the Hop-On-Hop-Off tour. We were the only ones on the very wet cold bus. Our guide was shivering. He pointed out "a great pub" so we decided we'd have dinner there. After the tour we headed for the Minster and gladly paid the donation, just to get inside out of the wet. We examined every nook and cranny of the place until there was nothing left to see. Hung out in the gift shop then. Finally we got our courage up enough to go outside again... and straight into a tea room. From there we made our way quickly to the Internet Cafe for another hour-long respite. That's when it began to snow. Back to the hotel for the rest of the afternoon.. screw it. It calmed down a little by 7:00 so we ventured out for dinner. The pub our guide pointed out was on the opposite end of York from our hotel. We got there and there was a sign on the door: "Kitchen Out Of Order, Crisps Only Today". Sigh. So the search begins. Kept getting to places just as they were closing until finally finding a pub still serving food. Only saving grace was seeing Whipmawhopma Gate. Muhahaha. Trudged back to the hotel cold and wet. It cleared up the next day as we took a cab back to the train station, on our way further north to Edinburgh.
