Most of the buildings in the Old Town of Edinburgh do not have street-side access to the upper floors. You get to them by going down (or up) an alleyway called a "close" which has doors on either side to the stairways in. In olden times they would close these alleys at night for security hence the name Close, which should not be confused with the Close of a Cathedral as seen in Salisbury. These alleys now have steps but originally were basically steep dirt paths where people threw their garbage and "stuff". (Don't forget to say "Gardyloo!").

The only reason I took this picture is cuz I'm a Simpson's fan and I liked the sign as a pun...
