In Disneyland terms, the Mermaid Lagoon is Fantasyland. In other words, it's where all the kid-oriented rides are located. It is however one of the coolest lands in the park, right behind Mysterious Island in the really neat theming department. On the day we visited it had the added bonus of being 90% indoors and out of the rain!

On the outside is a full-sized (as far as *I* can tell) King Triton Castle. Lots of curves and pastels. There is water running everywhere, most of it not related to the rain :-). The exteriors are covered in beautiful tiles with much effort put into the details. Look for Little Mermaid characters in the tiles! We didn't try any of the 5 rides, even though they looked like they would accomodate our size no problem. 2 were outside, a spinner and a little coaster ala Gadget's Go-Coaster. Didn't ride these as it was raining pretty hard at this point. We opted instead to spend our time inside.

When you go into Triton's Kingdom, you enter an incredible underworld playground. It is absolutely beautiful. It's also a pretty big area, about the size of the Life Pavillion in Epcot, but the darkness makes it seem bigger. There are several small rides, a Jellyfish Drop, and teacup-like spinner, and a hanging-spinner. The big attraction in this land however is actually a live show, "Under The Sea" in the Mermaid Lagoon Theater. One of my slides has a link to spoliers about this not-to-be-missed production. Another section of the land is Ariel's Grotto, a play area for kids a little bit younger than those who would enjoy Fortress Explorations. We had a ball exploring all the caves and stuff though :-)

There's a pizza restaraunt and a big shop inside a sleeping whale. He looks like Monstro, but wrong movie theme... just a generic friendly whale... you are shopping in his mouth afterall. The only bummer about this land is how difficult it is to take non-flash pictures. Flash pictures don't really show the land in it's best light (nyuk nyuk), and without a tripod, non-flashers tend to come out a little blurred. We took about 40 pics here and I had to toss most of them.
